The Training Tree & Cyrenians

Profile

The Training Tree in association with Cyrenians have developed a novel way of engaging businesses with third sector organisations who work at the coal face of social issues. The integration of CSR with volunteering team challenges and learning and development team days, provides a powerful environment to engage teams, develop learning and support social issues in an empowering and experiential way.

Cyrenians support people who have experienced homelessness or social exclusion. They run a residential community in West Lothian which provides a supportive environment for eight young people. Part of this community is a working organic farm that is used as a platform for work and volunteer experience for the residents. Any profit made through the sale of its organic produce or use of the farm as a team building venue, is used to fund the project.

Team Challenges (Volunteering Day on farm)

Summary
The Cyrenians Farm is a developing social enterprise. There are a number of team challenges directly related to farm activities, or a set of games run in the setting of the farm, both of which make for a great day.

Activities involve effective planning, delegation, communication and implementation skills, all to be completed within set time limits. Time targets are set to ensure that the teams are stretched to achieve their goals. All activities are designed with facilitators feeding back on the team’s interaction and individual performance.

For a more in-depth learning and development experience resulting in improved performance, dynamic relationships, greater innovation, effective communication and a strong sense of shared purpose, specific team diagnostics can be incorporated. These include facilitated learning around the activities from profiling, to creative culture, communication styles and team interaction analysis.
